「割引クーポン」を意味する英語にcredit certificateという
表現が用いられたことがあります。
私にとって、あまり聞き慣れない言葉であったので、
この言葉のニュアンスをネイティブスピーカーに聞いてみることに。
以下、ネイティブスピーカーからの返答内容。
creditという言葉の意味合いについて、
We use the word credit to mean to give some discount (up to 100%)
for future purchases instead of giving cash back to the customer
for a returned product, bad/unused service, etc.
(The customer has already paid, so it is a credit, not only a discount)
そして、certificateという言葉の意味合いについて、
Since many transactions are electronic these days, we often don’t use
certificate. However if a paper version is submitted
we should call it a credit certificate or credit voucher.
ニュアンスつかめましたでしょうか。
ちなみに「割引クーポン」はお金を払い戻すわけではないので、
refund（「払い戻し」）とはこれ違うわけです。
